Divine Holiday Trunk Show, Black Friday & Thankfulness

Today is the first day of the Divine Digital Holiday Trunk Show and in addition to having some super cute freebies "hidden" in the forums (http://www.divinedigital.com/forum/index.php), there are grab bags on sale, new holiday items decorating the halls of the site and some of the designers are giving away some freebies on their blogs.

I have not blogged in ages, but that's about to change. I'm working with the infamous "Flergs" to redesign my blog and I can't wait until it is customized with all things me--vintage, ecclectic and fun. I am hoping to get the new blog up before Christmas, so keep your eyes peeled for my beeeautiful new blog, okay?

So Black Friday. Not once in my life have I ever gone shopping on Black Friday. In my house that was just something you didn't do. And today when I tired to call my mom, she didn't answer. Not at home and not on her cell. Where was she? SHOPPING!!!! Not fair, especially since we were supposed to be in Pittsburgh for Turkey Day but stayed behind due to my youngest son getting hurt and suffering a concussion. He's still walking around with a swollen head and today we spent the entire day at the hospital getting a sedated CAT Scan. So if I am thankful for anything this Thanksgiving it is that he is alive, well and whatever is going on will not be permanent damage. It has been a rough couple days and I haven't slept AT ALL while his head is all swollen like this. So I am behind on everything, including my Black Friday sale. "What Black Friday Sale?" Yeah, well there isn't one. All the time I had set aside for getting new stuff in my boutiques and sale prices on older stuff went to curb when Henry hit is head. So I don't have one new product for you on this day of shopping madness.

DSD Freebie, Sales and more!!!

Sadly, I start this post with a photo of my cat, Buc, who passed away yesterday. He was a wonderful cat, the first pet my husband and I got together. There is a big hole in my heart where he used to be and I've been struggling yesterday and today with his loss.

Soundtrack of Your Life?

Lately I have really been digging into the music on my iPod. Whenever I am out in public with my laptop designing or touching up photos or just playing, I always have my iPod on to tune out all the loud talkers on cell phones and those sitting around me. So I began thinking about some of the music that I go back to just about every day to listen to and inspire me. Music that lifts me up, sets my spirit soaring and my creativity climbing towards my goals of being a great photographer and designer. And sometimes, music that just gets me off my backside and into my life in a happier place.

So today, I pose the question to you, my blog readers, "What is the Soundtrack of YOUR Life?" Let's see some playlist layouts! Let's all learn about what music makes each of us uniquely one with this world we live in! I want to see who jives with my playlist and I want to discover some new artists I've yet to meet through all of you guys. I want to learn about the tunes that raise you up and the tunes that make you move faster through this chaotic life we all live.

Music has always been such an important part of my life. I played the flute, studied privately for close to 15 years and at one point in my life I longed to be in a symphony. Another discarded dream. But now I rarely listen to classical music. Don't know why, but I just don't. I sang in the Acapella choir in school and in church choirs all my life and can harmonize with the best of them. But I don't sing in a choir anymore, just in the shower and car (much to the dismay of my two children who think their mommy is nuts behind the wheel). I have such a wide variety of music on my iPod I think that many of my followers would be amazed at how I go from Tori Amos to Bethany Dillon, from Blue Rodeo to Flo Rida, and from Nanci Griffith to John Mayer (that Tweet I love to bother, but I know he just ignores my sarchastic tweets). And that I also listen to Christmas music anytime, no matter if it is the holiday season or not. When I'm sad or in a dark mood Faure's Requiem is what I need. Pie Jesu being my favorite part of the Requiem. And Mozart's Requiem is also on my list of funeral music (that is what I call the music I listen to when death creeps underneath my door). If I'm feeling down on myself, I put on some Steve Earle and I'm up and about in no time, dancing in the kitchen or tapping my flip flops in the coffee house.

So what is your soundtrack? I want to know! Make a playlist on iTunes and share it. Make a layout and share it. Share your soundtrack. Share the music that makes you uniquely you. Share your soul music, your funeral music and your music of joy and happiness. I want to hear it all. I want to learn who you are by listening to what music you jive to when you are happy, sad, creative or just plain normal. Let me have it!!!! And give me one song for every year you've been blessed to be on this earth!

Since I have so many soundtracks, I'm going to call this soundtrack my "Cherry Alley Cafe Soundtrack." The Cherry Alley Cafe is where I spend my time designing when my boys are in preschool. It is a little coffee house in Lewisburg, PA frequented by many people from so many walks of life. It is amazing to have a place you can go 5 days a week and see the comings and goings of the world around you ina new way every day. Every day I see something new, have an "ahhh" moment when I see the elderly couple share a scone or the little children sipping hot chocolate and trying not to spill it. Or the woman who came in one day with tatooed "socks" as I phrase it---her legs were tatooed from toes to knee and she was wearing flip flops. Wish I had my camera that day! Today is the day after Bucknell's graduation so this place is packed with students and their friends, having their last taste of Cherry Alley pancakes together, students with their parents getting ready to head out on the road to wherever their summer takes them. It makes me want to jump for joy because tomorrow I won't have to fight for a table near an outlet!

Tomorrow I will be posting my kit for the second challenge for Funky Playground Designs' "Capture the Flag" design contest. I want to thank everyone who visited the gallery and left me comments for "Fish Camp," it was fun to see some familar names, as well as new names in the comment section. Here is my preview for my Chalenge 2 kit, but I won't be posting it in the FPD gallery until tomorrow....so you'll have to wait. But take a look and let me know what you think, okay? We were given the color swatch (which I loved and found it really easy to work with) and we were limited this time to 3 patterned papers, 1 solid paper and 6 elements. AND we could only use 3 CU items. I aimed to use NO commercial use items other than my own stuff, but ended up using a cute alpha template from LBCreations. So in a way I'm proud that my little kit is almost 100% me! Everything but the letters in the alpha is 100% Wetfish Designs. And, once again, I am making the announcement that freebies that are not blog train related or contest related will only be distributed via my email newsletter. All 12 statues were photographed by me using a professional DSLR camera and lens and then were extracted. These were photographed at a cemetary in Haddonfield, New Jersey. I photographed tons of beautiful statues and crosses. So expect more "Sanctuary" in the near future....

And I guess it is time to share some news I've been sitting on. I have decided to expand Wetfish Designs into some new stores in addition to my home at Divine Digital. I am still at Divine Digital and will remain an administrator there. Divine Digital will remain my home base as the owners and designers are like family to me. With the economy being the way it is, and two boys getting older and wanting to do more and more activities, I'm hoping that this expansion will result in more exposure in the digital scrap community and more customers.

I am setting up shop as we speak at "Been There Scrapped That" and I'm really excited that Liz Hutchinson took me under her wing and gave me this opportunity. The other store that I am attempting to work with is "Funky Playground Designs." So this is week one of their designer competition, "Capture the Flag," and I have my first entry uploaded and you can download it and check it out. For those of you who loved my Angler kit, this is one you don't want to miss. And the other contestants have some awesome free kits in the gallery, too, so make sure you download all the kits and get the goodies while you can.

Wow, it has been ages since I've blogged, posted a new kit or a freebie! Time sure does fly when you have two little ones to chase after! ? We had a wonderful trip to Florida to visit my husband's parents, grandparents and his Uncle's family and even though driving to Florida meant a total of almost 40 hours in the car, the boys were champs all around and it was a nice vacation spent with family, sun, sand and surf. Dollar Day BONANZA at Wetfish Designs!

Happy Valentine's Day!!! Hope you are headed for a romantic, sweet and fun day with your loved ones. I've got a whole lot of things to do today, but at the top of the list is posting freebies throughout the day as a part of my "Dollar Day Bonanza!" Starting with this post I have a freebie and then keep coming back throughout the day for more freebies! How's that for sweetness on Valentine's Day! First up is my last "Hollywood & Vine" freebie for Day 13. In keeping with my tradition of lateness this month, it is one day late. But still a fun freebie. Up next are my "Mystery Kits" that are something new I'm trying. Basically these are two brand new kits that I didn't have time to preview. So I decided, why not put them in the dollar sale without the previews and make them a mystery? I have included some hints as to the colors of the kit and if you look at the detailed images section of both mystery kits you will see a few elements so you can get an idea of the style of the kit. Hope you grab these two kits. I had a lot of fun making them and trying out some new skills I've learned. And these two kits are boy friendly. I used colors that I like for my boys and stayed away from girly type elements and papers for the most part. The second mystery kit even contains three unique overlays that you can lay over one of the papers in the kit or any other kit you have for a really neat look. CU Freebie---Trio of Botanical Overlays

I am making a ton of new CU products for my boutique and will be retiring just about everything that is in it now come March 1st. This is a set of three "Botanical Overlays" that were lone leftovers after I made five sets of "Botanical Overlays" so I decided to make them CU freebies. I made them from some vintage fabrics that I purchased at an antique store so they are unqiue in design and they have a lot of depth in texture since the fabric was a heavy weave.

So before we start creating handmade clay layer styles like crazy, we're going to try them out here on my blog and see how we do. So here they are....aren't they beautiful? All these layer styles (below and above) were created in CS3 and do work in PSE 4, 5 , 6 and 7. Stand Up and CARE! Blog Party Day 2

I can't believe it is Christmas Eve! And I actually just finished wrapping all the boys gifts and it isn't the middle of the night, either! My parents snuck them out of the house for a holiday lunch at Friendlys and I did a mad rush to get it all wrapped and hidden before they got back. Whew!!! Now I'm exhausted, not just from the wrapping but from keeping my three cats off the wrapping paper and the ribbon out of their mouths. My three cats, one of which is 13 years old and the other two are 5 and 6 years old, become kittens every holiday season when I pull out the ribbon and wrapping paper. The metallic tissue is their favorite, probably because it makes noise when they slide across the room on it! Oh the life with three cats and two boys....and of course my two dogs and husband. Never a dull moment, even when wrapping presents!

Now that the boys are back from Friendly's and Henry is down for his nap, and I made the lasagna this morning so dinner is taken care of, I'm going to blog and post my two sets of freebies and then get ready for the 4:00 service we're going to today for Christmas Eve. It is a new church, one we've never been to, but one that has a lot of children and tons of programming for children and adults alike. So I'm excited to go for the first time and check it out and the service today will have a puppet show that I'm sure the boys will love. We had an ice store very early this morning and it looked like no one would be going anywhere today, but thankfully it warmed up and the salt trucks made a pass through a couple times and now everything is fine. Can't wait to get out of the house!

I think that the topic of charity and my friend Laura has run its course. Please stop the comments that only aim to bring her down and make me mad. Flame on? You bet I will....

To the last comment made by Missy I say this: just because she has a cell phone, which is often cheaper than having a home phone and some people only use a cell phone as their main phone, and just because she bought her little boys Halloween costumes (it is cheaper to buy them than it is to make them these days AND you can get used Halloween costumes at thrift stores), and has pets does NOT make her a "handout" type of woman or citizen. I visited the link you posted "Missy" and it is a conservative website and boasts "christian" viewpoints. Well I am a conservative and a christian. And I don't see what either has to do with my helping a friend with a little grab bag that might help her get through the holidays in a little better shape than if I had done nothing. I'd do so if I wasn't a Christian and wasn't conservative. Actually, Christians and conservatives tend to be more giving and compassionate so you lost me. Would you rather she go beg on the street? Make her pets homeless? Deny her children the joy of a Halloween costume? Not have a phone? How Christian are you to suggest such things as being luxury items? And her husband going to school is an effort to improve their lives so they don't need help....can't you see that? In order to get out of the hole they are in he is going to school at night while working full time during the day so that they can all have a better life. How is that not the right thing to do?

Missy and everyone else who is coming here to shame my friend, well the party is over. I'm disabling comments. If you don't like it, too bad. Some people have gone too far. This is not a smack blog and I'll not tolerate trolls coming on my blog and trashing my dear friend and speculating about things that simply are not true. So for now I am no longer taking comments on this or any subject as I want to try and get myself back in the holiday spirit and not worry about what else is being said on MY BLOG that will make my friend more upset than she already is. So go hijack another blog to bitch on and insult people, this one is closed for you.

THE TRUTH

Okay, this is a first for me. I just had someone leave a comment on my blog this morning which was a bunch of quotes about gossip. This post was made anonymously. I deleted it. Why? Because it was ridiculous. This is my blog and I'll post what I want and delete what I want. This blog does not belong to the digi community but to me. If I want to discuss what a customer said to me, I'll do that. I didn't share the customers name. I didn't share anything beyond my frustration with people being inconsiderate and cruel when someone is in need or when someone lends a hand to someone who is in need. If you don't like my grab bag sale to help a friend, just don't buy it and if you don't like the idea of someone selling her store and sharing with consumers the reason why, don't buy her store and don't read about it.

Now the comment about the gossip quotes is back. Hi Jane! I'm going to leave them since you felt so strongly as to post them again. They are actually good quotes but they don't really apply to me as I was not gossiping. If I was gossiping I would have named names. The person whose comment on an invoice I was upset about was gossiping and even admitted as much when she indicated she has "yet to talk to another designer friend of mine who has seen this ad & thinks this isn't tacky." So the gossip quotes belong to her, not me. She discussed my friend's sale and financial situation with others. That is gossip.

But what really prompted me to post again is the last comment made by someone who chose to remain anonymous. Here you go, read it in bigger print---it is a rant worth larger print and color:

Well isn't it enough that I pay such high TAXES for these incompetant people to sit on welfare? Why should I dish out more of my hard earned money to these selfish people who rather than stop doing what they know isn't working(going to school while children starve)they just stick their hand out to all and everyone in anonymous web land, I bet not one cent of these so called charity gifts are being accounted to the welfare dept. Their are serious people in real need and people like you designers who don't register your fund raising schemes or acts of charity are just jokes ripping off the wonderful giving and loving digi community like myself and all the real giving charitable women in this world! Who put our money/time/effort into real legitimate and registered charity functions!So she put all her store on sale, many designers do the exact same thing for many different reasons, but I've yet to see one designer do it in such a tactless way as this, I'm sitting here reading that ad thinking sell your bloody computer, your cell phone and all your other crap before crying poor to me or just put "sale" without all the emotional crap on your product listing!I think your airing a private comment about a customer on your blog is "TACKY" and don't look now but you have turned this blog into a "smack blog"!! LOL I wonder what the anonymous comment you deleted said?! I bet it was the only real truthful thing said on this post!Royanna are you a responsible business owner? how you handled this situation is inappropriate. How dare you berate a customer in this way! I'd not be surprised that you have passed her name around to everyone in your store and forum, touting yourself as the most charitable woman around and how dare anyone question your motives on this "cause" after all haven't you had the best month in sales since using this "cause" to your financial and mutual benefit! Why don't you put your money where your mouth is and donate to this Laura all your month's taking and not just give lip service to it but show us some real receipts of you doing it? How much have you raised for her and how much has she taken in sales, real charity funraisers have this information available to the public, this so called "charity" case is a joke and illegal!Yes, there are laws to protect the everyday charitable person from being taken advantage of in this way and many real and more worthwhile fundraisers to participate in!Please display how much income this "charity case" is actually getting from all her various sources, redundancies from leaving job, Husbands income, welfare income, partnership for Devine's ownership shared income, church handouts and welfare and then allow us grownups the decision on whether she is really a worthy cause or not! Heck I bet she has more disposal income than the magority of your customers who spend at your store!I appaud that designer for having the courage to tell you what alot of your customers were thinking anyway!

To this comment and anonymous person, I say:

1. I only deleted one comment and it has now been reposted and will stay that way since there is a name attached to it. Perhaps you should consider putting your name next to your convictions and opinions since you seem to have some pretty strong opinions about me.
2. This is not a smack blog. If you or anyone else continues to post comments in an effort to spew nastiness, I'll just disable comments or delete them. This blog is not a forum for people to anonymously post opinons, whether I agree with those opinions or not. Go find a real smack blog if that is what you want to do.
3. My friend, who I chose to help with a donation of my sales from a grab bag, is not a welfare recipient. So she isn't cheating anyone and no one is hiding any sales from the welfare department. And this isn't a scam or scheme to pull the wool over the digi community's eyes. For goodness sake, this is a $6 grab bag!!! Seriously now, to say that"fund raising schemes or acts of charity are just jokes ripping off the wonderful giving and loving digi community like myself and all the real giving charitable women in this world!" is just too much for me. If you were a truly charitable and giving woman you wouldn't be posting such nasty things THAT ARE NOT TRUE about my friend. You have made her out to seem like a scheming woman on welfare ready to take money raised by me or herself just so she can go to a spa or shop at Nordstroms. She is trying to put food on the table, heat her home and put a few gifts under the tree for her children. There is nothing illegal going on here. There is no scheme. It is people like you who go and post things that aren't true that make people question the sincerity of others when they do something that is decent and honest or ask for help because they really need it. Shame on you!
4. Why are you asking Royanna (correct way to spell her name by the way) on my blog? This isn't Royanna's blog and she didn't ask me to post anything or sell anything to help out our mutual friend. She, like me, is a bit dumbfounded at how cruel so many people can be when someone is in need.
5. I didn't share this customers name with anyone other than those who received a copy of the invoice on which she made her comment. That would be me, since she used a gift coupon in my store, Laura whose store she purchased despite having said she didn't agree with the whole idea behind the sale (hypocrisy perhaps?) and the store owners, Laura and Royanna. I passed around her name to NO ONE. I did not visit any forums or smack blogs and say "hey, guess what so and so said to me." That is not my style. Those fellow designers and customers who know me know that I am not like that and I would never do such a thing. Posting about it---about my frustration with the situation in general about lack of charity and compassion in the world today---on my blog is how I dealt with it. That is my style. And just so you know, I have just about donated all this month's sales to Laura as the products in that grab bag were what I planned on putting in my store this month. This has been my worst month for sales to date because I gave up my sales for a friend. So actually I consider it my best month in sales because she needed the money more than I did and the amount that I was able to raise for Laura is her business and my business, not yours. And if you think I'm going to share invoices to prove to you or anyone else how much I have raised for her with my grab bag sales, think again.
6. It is "Divine" Digital, not "Devine" Digital. Learn how to spell.

For those customers that came here for a freebie, I apologize for the drama. And if you are of the same opinion as this poster is, I really don't need or want to hear about it. The holidays are supposed to be a time of giving and caring and I feel like I am defending myself for being charged with the horrific crime of kindness and compassion.

I want to end this blog post with a little note about charity. Charity to me is something that is very personal and very important. Charity can be a kind word to someone who is upset or down, and charity can also be a donation made to an organization, cause or friend in need. Recently I started selling my "Santa's Vintage CU Sack" to help out my friend, Laura. Today I was shocked beyond belief when a fellow designer told me via an invoice comment box that "Operation Save Christmas" was "tacky" and that other designers in the digi design community also felt the same way. So my act of charity, to help a friend who is in financial need with a brand new baby and who lost her job just before her baby was born, has now become "tacky" in the eyes of my designer peers. How sad. How terribly sad. Not for me---believe me, I've been called worse than "tacky" and I can take it. But to leave nasty comments in the checkout process so the designer behind "Operation Save Christmas" can read them, well that is just over the top in my book.

Where has the goodness in the world gone? Don't people realize that if someone is so hard up that they are selling their store and all their designs at a ridiculously low price to try and get through the holidays with a roof over their head and a few gifts under the tree for their three young chhildren they deserve a little compassion and sensitivity? Tacky isn't a word I believe belongs in charity. There is no tackiness in helping others, especially a friend in need. Tacky is an adjective for the fashion industry, furniture, etc. It isn't, in my humble opinion, an adjective that should even be in the same sentence as charity.

Yes, a lot of people are going through tough economic times right now. Some go through them silently without a word to anyone and others need help and let it be known. To do so is not tacky and to help someone is not tacky, either.

So to those designers that are here to download yet another CU freebie from me, I ask that you remember that kindness, compasssion, empathy and sincerity are all words that go in tandem with charity for me. Not tacky. Never tacky. No act of charity can ever be called tacky. And if you don't agree with that, and you are one of the designers on one of those smack blogs or bulletin boards talking about how tacky this is or that is in terms of helping someone via a sale, well that is your opinion and your are entitled to it. But have a little "tact" and don't leave nasty comments on the invoices so the designer in need reads them. What purpose does that serve other than to be cruel? Cruel at Christmas....is that the new theme in the digi world?

Now, seven things I love.....again, this will be hard...obviously family comes first but I'm not going to discuss people I love but things I love.....:)

1. Netflix---a SAHM's only way to get to the movies

2. ArtRage---so much fun to play around with and make glittery, paintsmeared elements

3. Books--I read a lot. A lot. Too many favorite books to list here but "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson is my all time favorite book and I read it once a year to keep my life in perspective.

4. My iPod---can't design without it. When my boys are in school and I'm hanging at the local coffee house it takes me to another world where I can design without the words of other conversations getting in my creative way. And next week I am getting an iPhone and I am so excited, I can't wait to get it and start playing!

5. Christmas Music---love it. Listen to it all year round. I look forward to the holiday season so that I can grab new holiday remakes and tunes off iTunes. So far, last year's "All I Want" by the Weepies is my favorite, followed by Jars of Clay's rendition of "Love Came Down at Christmas."

6. Taking photographs---of everything. Not much time for it lately, but I do so enjoy getting my eye behind the camera and capturing my world.

7. "Life on Mars" my new favorite tv show....I also watched this show when the BBC did it a few years ago. The US version is much better! And I love the actor and loved him even more when he was in the BBC show "Monarch of the Glen"

So there you go, a little more info on me, what I love and blogs I love.....go check it all out!

This past month seems to have been really tough for me. My youngest, Henry, had to have his tonsils out after a terrible bout with Hand Foot and Mouth Disease. So the surgery is now over but the recovery is still going on. Poor little guy....It seems I haven't been able to get anything done on time or on schedule these past few weeks. I even missed posting my ASPCA freebies for the blog party which I organized! Wait, I haven't even made them yet!!!!! Plan on doing that this weekend and posting them on Sunday, so make sure you come back for them. So I feel like I am running in place on a treadmill, not getting anywhere but running out of energy doing it. Know what I mean?

I am also attempting to work on and finish my family photobook for the holidays by Thanksgiving so I can get it ordered and mailed early for once . Every year I give a book of the boys to all the grandparents. My favorite thing about making these books, other than getting to scrap for once and not design, is the chance to use designs from other artists. I rarely use my own designs in these books because I so want to use some of the "stash" I have collected from some amazing designers over the past few years.

Here is what I have finished so far.....

And today I got the camera out and took advantage of the beautiful light coming in through the window in my dining room. Sunny snow days are the best for natural light portraits! And I needed to update my own portrait so I attempted a self-portrait. Not sure if I like it, so I'll probably keep playing around whenever the lighting is good. Anyway, I needed some more formal portraits for the photobook and my boys performed wonderfully (in exchange for a grape lollipop). Check it out....

And if you haven't been in my shop lately, I have quite a few new products. My "Christmas Cheer!" is the Divine Diva Deal until next Wednesday---only 2 bucks! And I have a new "Vintage CU Box of Cheer" on sale for $15.99 until Thanksgiving. The box includes all my vintage stuff currently in my store. We went on a hayride to the pumpkin patch with the boys' preschool and then we took a drive up to the Endless Mountain region of Pennsylvania to visit Eaglesmere and World's End State Park. Here are some shots of our little fall excursion to celebrate the changing of the leaves and the end of summer......the photos are not touched up yet but I wanted to share how beautiful it is this time of year in Central Pennsylvania.....and share some photos of my boys since I haven't posted any since we were in Maine this summer....
